Timeline of Important battles of the American Revolution
Paul Revere's Ride (April 18, 1775) - The Revolutionary War starts as Paul Revere makes his famous ride to warn the colonists that the "British are coming".
Battle of Lexington and Concord (April 19, 1775) - The fighting starts with the first "shot heard around the world". The Americans win at Concord as the British retreat.
Battle of Bunker Hill (June 16, 1775) – This is a major battle where William Prescott told the American troops "don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes".
George Washington Crosses the Delaware (Dec. 25, 1776) - George Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night and surprised the enemy. The American forces were going through a very tough time right before the crossing. They had been pushed back all the way from New York to Pennsylvania. Many of General Washington's men were injured or ready to leave the army. The number of troops was dwindling and winter was approaching. The army desperately needed a victory. The victory gave a huge boost in morale to the American soldiers.
Battles of Saratoga (September 19, October 17, 1777) - British General Burgoyne surrenders his army to the Americans after losing at the Battles of Saratoga.
Valley Forge (Winter of 1777-1778) - The Continental army under George Washington spends the winter training at Valley Forge. They had to deal with cold, wet, and snowy weather. They were often hungry, as food was scarce. Many of the soldiers didn't have warm clothing or even shoes as their shoes had worn out on the long march to the valley. There were few blankets as well. Living in cold, damp, and crowded log cabins made matters even worse because it allowed diseases such as typhoid fever, pneumonia, and smallpox to spread quickly throughout the camp. Of the 10,000 men who began the winter at Valley Forge, around 2,500 died before the spring.
Battle of Yorktown (Oct. 19, 1781) - The last major battle of the American Revolutionary War. British General Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown was the unofficial end to the war.
Treaty of Paris (Sept. 3, 1783) - Treaty that officially ended the war.
